Minority Advisory Committee honors civil rights activist

At the event, top business leaders conducted a panel discussion on economic development and job creation.

ABC11 President and General Manager Caroline Welch presented the school with a check representing a contribution to the J. William Becton Scholarship Fund.

Becton, who passed away Wednesday, was the first director of Durham's Human Relations Commission and former chairman of ABC11's Minority Affairs Committee.

Ervin Hester was also recognized at the event. Hester signed on as the first African-American on-air anchor for ABC11 back in 1971.
