The wreck happened on I-40 eastbound between Garner and Benson.
An eyewitness on the scene said nine people were in the vehicle, including five children, some of whom were unrestrained.
A 4-month-old was rushed to WakeMed with serious injuries. The other eight patients were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
I-40 east was shut down for 30 minutes. One lane was still closed as of 6:30 p.m.
The highway patrol is investigating the accident. So far no charges have been filed.
