Thousands take part in Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon

RALEIGH, N.C.

The marathon, half-marathon and a marathon relay race each started at the N.C. State Bell Tower, followed by the Old Reliable 10K race and a kids' marathon mile.

Among those that crossed the finish line was a guy dressed in a suit and tie.

"Sunday finest! You know, come out for a race! And I have a couple of business meetings I had to attend, so I came ready," runner Dane Salaback said.

All the races except the 10K event also finished at the Bell Tower, while the 10K race wrapped up on nearby Clark Street. The course was a change from previous years, and many runners were in favor of the new race.

"They changed the course so it goes down Crabtree instead of up through the Umstead. But I like going downtown!" runner Michael Dudek said.

As a result, many local roads and intersections in that part of Raleigh closed for several hours. All closures have since reopened.

Police were on hand to direct traffic and to keep participants safe, taking no chances after the Boston Marathon bombing earlier this year.

"We noticed the police officers as well as the rescue, fire rescue individuals who were standing out. So I felt real secure and safe during this run," race participant Jamilah McClain said.
