Raleigh troopers say texting driver hit family on I-540

RALEIGH

It happened around 9:30 a.m. near Exit 2.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a family had pulled over on the median to change a tire. A mom and two children got out of the car.

Just then, troopers said driver 26-year-old Aaron Artis, of Cary, received a text message, looked to read it, and when he looked up, found he was barreling forward the family. As he was trying to straighten out, he hit another car.

The driver of that vehicle, Laura Labdon, of Raleigh, was seriously injured and sent to Duke University Hospital.

The two children, ages 5 and 10, standing in the median were not hit and are doing okay. Their mother, Adriana Sepulveda, was taken to Duke with minor injuries.

Artis has been charged with texting while driving and failure to maintain lane control.
