The fire started just after midnight at Foxfire Apartment Homes on New Castle Road, according to Deputy Fire Chief Chris Iannuzzi.
One person had to be taken to Duke Hospital with burn injuries, but is expected to be okay.
Iannuzzi said one unit was heavily damaged and other partially damaged in the fire. Four units were affected because electricity had to be turned off.
The resident told investigators the fire started in the kitchen.
