Suspicious device set on fire along Chapel Hill road

CHAPEL HILL

Around 9:30 p.m., Chapel Hill police were called to the intersection of Elliott Road and E. Franklin Street, near First Citizens Bank, after someone spotted the device on fire and smoldering.

Authorities closed the roads as a precaution while the Durham County Sheriff's Bomb Detection Unit investigated.

They later determined that the device was not an explosive and reopened the roadway.

Meanwhile, the investigation is still ongoing.
