Unemployed journalist turns to internet for monetary help

RALEIGH

Craig Lindsey's story has now gone viral. He was looking for about $900, but he's already raised more than $4,000.

"When you're caught in a desperate situation like I was, the only way you can do it is be honest and realize where you are," said Lindsey.

The year 2013 was a particular one for Lindsey. Again, he borrowed money from friends, cut corners where he could, and took any freelance job offered.

"I wrote for Vibe at one point," he said.

On New Year's Eve, Lindsey posted something online vastly different from other articles he's written. He pleaded for help paying his rent. He has fallen so far behind with his payments that his landlord is now suing him. They are scheduled to be in court on Monday.

"I was about ready to give up and then I realized there's Indiegogo," said Lindsey.

The response online was something he never would have imagined. At last check, more than $4,600 has been donated, which is five times more than his original goal.

"I'm very grateful for that," said Lindsey. "I have enough now for the rent I owe and for the next couple months."

Friends of Lindsey told ABC11 that it was very hard for him to put out this call and he had to swallow his pride. Now, he has a lot of optimism to start the new year.

"It did start off in a very good way," he said. "It was a very wonderful thing that happened."

Lindsey says now he can concentrate on his job search with the clear mind and focus on settling debts and hopefully settle into a new full-time job.

"Hopefully, I can get something steady going and have the nice benefits and all," said Lindsey. "Just go out there and see what I can do as a writer."
