Jason Beyer took a bullet to the back in the violent attack when he bravely confronted the intruders and stopped the attack on his wife. His bold move allowed her to escape and run for help.
Beyer remains in a wheelchair and is paralyzed from the belly button down. He is determined to walk again, whether on his own or with the help of new technology.
Meanwhile, he has returned to work, which includes traveling unassisted across the country. After much practice in parking lots, he also drives a specially-equipped car.
As for his wife, he says their bond is stronger than ever.
"I guarantee it's gotten stronger. I'm just amazed at the strength she has and everything she did to help me out," he said. "We were excited to celebrate for New Years, to get away us alone and just be happy for what we have, thankful for what we have, and talk about our future."
As for what the future holds, Beyer said he will have to relive that night in an upcoming trial. He and his wife are not looking forward to it, but he hopes they can put it behind them and focus on other things - like starting a family.
The Beyers got a jump start on that by adopting a dog this week.
