American Tobacco Trail Bridge finally opens

The long-awaited and much-delayed opening of the American Tobacco Trail bridge over Interstate 40 in Durham County happened Thursday.

The 270 foot long bike and pedestrian bridge is just west of Fayetteville Road near the Streets at Southpoint.

The ABC11 I-Team has been exposing a series of delays and cost overruns on the project since last year.

Durham city leaders even told the I-Team last November that the entire project should cost about $11 million, which is well over the original $7.5 million estimate.

Among other issues that plagued the project were problems with the safety fencing and rails.
