Boy spends savings on smoke detectors for families in need

DALLAS

Hector Montoya heard about a fire near his Texas town that killed a mother and her child. The family didn't have working smoke detectors.

Hector decided to take all the money he was saving and buy smoke detectors for people who needed them.

"I was saving the $300 for a PS4 but I said saving a life is more important," Hector said. "It really hurts my heart to see people die in a fire."

This past weekend, Hector, with the help of his local fire department, installed nearly 100 smoke detectors. His friends and neighbors also joined the effort.

Hector ended up getting his PS4 after all. Someone who saw his good deed on the news bought him one.
