Search underway for suspected ATM skimmer
Authorities in Chatham County are searching for a suspected ATM skimmer

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities in Chatham County are searching for a person caught on camera installing a "skimming" device on an ATM.

Bank security spotted the skimming device on one of the ATMs and called the Sheriff's Office. Investigators determined a female driving a white minivan was responsible for installing the device.

Skimming is a method used to capture data from a credit/debit card's magnetic strip.

Authorities said no customer information was compromised, because the skimmer had not yet been accessed by the suspect.

Deputies did not say which bank was involved in the crime.

The investigation is currently ongoing and investigators are actively seeking leads. If anyone knows the location of the vehicle pictured or has any information about the identity of its driver, please call the Chatham County Sheriff's Office immediately at 919-542-2911.

If you believe you have located a skimming device on an ATM or other machine, do not insert your card; instead, contact the associated bank or law enforcement personnel right away to make sure no one else falls victim to the scam.
