CARMEL, Calif. -- A baby otter separated from her mother is safe after people walking a California beach heard her desperate cries.
Marine wildlife experts were called in and took the 3-week-old female otter to several points along the water, hoping its mother would hear it crying and swim to shore. The technique only works about 10 percent of the time.
Rescuers saw several otters near the beach, but none responded to the pup's cries.
The pup has been taken to the Monterey Bay Aquarium where experts will decide where she will have a permanent home.
