Seattle cheese ban
The Seattle suburb of Bainbridge Island bans cheeses in run-up to Sunday's game against the Packers.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. -- The NFL playoffs are serious business -- and the stakes are often further raised by boastful politicians challenging each other with side bets of clam chowder, pastrami sandwiches or other signature foods representing competing cities.

But one Seattle suburb has turned this edible tradition on its head.

In preparation of Sunday's NFC Championship game between the Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers, the city of Bainbridge Island, Wash., has decreed that on Friday the consumption of cheese is officially banned.

"We always celebrate Blue Friday on Fridays before Seahawks games and have snacks and an employee gathering. So this Friday, I thought it would be fun to not have any cheese products for our Blue Friday celebration," said Bainbridge Island City Manager Doug Schulze.

And it's all because of "the relationship between the Green Bay Packers, their fans and cheese," said Schulze, of his lactose intolerant edict. The order also authorizes city employees to wear Seahawks colors and gear.

Schulze said the order is in retaliation for Packers fans banning Seattle brands such as Starbucks coffee. There is yet no reply from stunned Green Bay Packers fans.
