FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVD) -- Police in Fayetteville say a car caught fire after it slammed into a utility pole on Murchison Road.

It happened around 2:40 a.m. Friday near the State Avenue intersection.

Investigators said a Nissan Altima was headed north when it left the road and hit the pole. The driver was pulled from the burning car and rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but he later died.

Murchison Road was closed in both directions from Langdon Street to Normal Avenue while police investigated, but has since reopened.
