Chaotic chase through two counties
Authorities say Robert Zimmerman led them through a chase in Person and Granville Counties

GRANVILLE COUNTY (WTVD) -- A man is facing a slew of charges after a crime spree spanning Granville and Person counties Saturday morning.

The Granville County Sheriff said it all started when the suspect, 48-year-old Robert Zimmerman, tried to break into a home on Satterwhite Road.

As he was leaving, a neighbor who said they witnessed the break-in started following Zimmerman in his vehicle.

A deputy joined the chase, and the sheriff said Zimmerman began shooting at the patrol car.

Zimmerman then took off down a farm road and ran through the woods, apparently trying to elude law enforcement.

Authorities said Zimmerman then held a woman at gunpoint and stole her car. Zimmerman passed deputies in the new getaway car and started firing shots again. Deputies returned fire as Zimmerman drove by them. The suspect was reportedly hit in the shoulder but kept driving.

The sheriff told ABC11 Zimmerman made it to Highway 49 where he stole another truck and tried to escape again. Zimmerman reportedly drove through yards and fields before he drove the truck into a pond and jumped out.

Zimmerman was eventually caught in a garage behind a convenience store.

Charges from both Granville and Person counties are pending.
