Public meeting planned for Raleigh neighborhood redevelopment

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Raleigh is looking to revive the Washington Terrace Neighborhood, but the change has had some local residents worried.

"People are afraid of getting to the end of the project and they won't have (anywhere) to go," Washington Terrace resident James Mitchell shared.

His neighborhood and nearby East College Park are slated to become mixed income neighborhoods. That would reportedly involve building and renovating homes and rental units as well as putting in new affordable housing.

Residents already living on tight budgets in these low-income neighborhoods are worried the progress will come at a price.

"If I pay $600 for this unit, am I going to be able to get the same unit for 600? That's basically what we want to know,'" explained Mitchell.

Those are the kind of questions residents are invited to ask at a public meeting on Monday at the Tarboro Road Community Center in Raleigh at 6:30 p.m.

Mitchell said he plans to attend, and he urged his neighbors to do the same.

"The ones who don't go should go. You should go. You should know what's going on around you. You skeptical about what's going on around you? Participate," he said.

"You got to put pressure on them, you got to let them know, 'Hey, I've been a part of this community for 17 years, I want to stay a part of this community,'" he added.

Organizers said they'll listen to concerns and share more about the plan at Monday's meeting, and will then revise the current plans one more time before another public hearing September 1st. Then it would have to be approved by the city council.
