DOT: Get a sober driver for the Super Bowl
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Department of Transportation urges football fans to avoid penalties and designate a sober driver for Super Bowl Sunday.
The DOT paired with the Governors Highway Safety Program to remind motorist to celebrate responsibly.
"Crashes involving impaired driving are 100 percent preventable, especially when you plan ahead," said GHSP director Don Nail. "We encourage fans to make a winning decision this Super Bowl by lining up a sober driver and always buckling up."
Fines for driving while impaired are significant. A DWI is expensive, and there is also the risk of severe injuries for the driver and other motorists.
According to the DOT, there were more than 20,000 crashes on North Carolina highways, resulting in 83 fatalities, between January 1 and February 2, 2014. Of those crashes, 951 were alcohol-related and resulted in 21 fatalities.
Some tips from the DOT include calling a taxi or asking a sober friend to drive you home. If you're hosting a Super Bowl party, the DOT suggests serving only non-alcoholic drinks during the fourth quarter.
