Durham Rescue Mission holds Easter dinner
There's nothing like seeing the smile on a child's face when they get a present--in Friday's case, an Easter basket filled with sweets and a toy.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- There's nothing like seeing the smile on a child's face when they get a present--in Friday's case, an Easter basket filled with sweets and a toy.

"One of the favorites, I love it," Durham Rescue Mission Director Rev. Ernie Mills said.

As with every big community outreach event at the Rescue Mission, people from all backgrounds wait in line before heading into church for a sermon, and then out for food and fun afterwards.

"I like it. I just like .. they give out food, and definitely the clothes," said Cynthia Howley of Durham. "It's just exciting to be here. We really don't have the money for the food and clothing. It costs a lot to clothe the kids and feed the kids so it's really a blessing."

"It's something you have to participate to see," Rescue Mission resident Dale Hayes said. "They're happy they get food, they get clothes, they get a lot of things, especially the word, that's what counts."

Rev. Mills said they had thousands of pieces of clothing to give away, groceries, and of course the Easter baskets that almost never came if it weren't for a last minute plea.

"We probably got over 900 just in the last week and that scares you to death when you have practically nothing and you got to put on an event this size," he said.

Next, the Rescue Mission has its biggest event--the Back-to-School Bash in August where kids get backpacks and school supplies.
