Social media uproar
Both sides have taken to social media in the bathroom ordinance flap.

The conversation surrounding House Bill 2 continues to play out on social media. Among other things, the bill squashes a Charlotte ordinance designed to allow people to choose a bathroom based on the gender they identify with.

Dozens of hashtags have cropped up Twitter, where much of the debate is playing out among people all across the United States.

Hashtags like "#KeepNCSafe" "#PatPromised" and "#PatDelivered" are all being used in support of the bill, while others like "#WeAreNotThis" "#BoycottNC" and "#Occupotty" are all being used against it.

Even Montana's governor, Steve Bullock, is weighing in online, asking people to "choose Montana."

Gov. Pat McCrory's office has tweeted Charlotte's ordinance "defied common sense."

Since McCrory's tweet, some transgender people have tweeted back at his account "@PatMcCrory," questioning the logic behind the bill.

Some conservative organizations have used the social-media platform to tell others they believe the bill intends to keep families safe from predators who might attempt to exploit a law that allows for bathroom choice.

Conservatives have also taken to Twitter to challenge companies that have expressed a vocal opposition to the bill, and have challenged the connection made between its passage and anti-tolerance.

Online comedy website, Funny or Die, has turned the ordeal into a joke.

Funny Or Die grabbed national attention, spoofing North Carolina's Visit NC campaign.

Visit North Carolina is part of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and has since released this statement:

The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina's mission is to aid in the creation of sustainable private-sector jobs and investment in North Carolina through the marketing of our state for corporate expansions and recruitment, international trade, small-business start-ups, and tourism, film and sports development.

We recognize the wide range of opinions on the new legislation, but as an organization that performs under contract with the state government, the EDPNC does not take positions on matters of public policy. As always, we're staying focused on our efforts to aggressively promote North Carolina for new business investment, international trade, and tourism, film production and sports.
