HILLSBOROUGH, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Health officials have identified three confirmed cases of mumps over the last two months in Orange County.

However, they are not revealing the ages of those infected or location of the confirmed cases, but Public Health Services Manager Iula Vann said none of the cases were in Hillsborough.

Vann said the Orange County Health Department has notified close contacts of all those infected and is now encouraging you to make sure you're properly vaccinated.

Symptoms typically appear between 16-18 days after infection and include such things as fever, muscle aches, headaches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. The clearest symptom of all, said Vann, is a swollen face or jaw.

The risk of becoming infected is low, especially if you've had two MMR vaccines. The health department can provide the vaccines to prevent mumps infection.

If you're already showing symptoms, health officials urge you to stay home and call your healthcare provider.

You can find more information on the health department's website.
