RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Members of the ABC11 family will take part in the Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS Saturday in honor of our colleague Larry Stogner and the thousands of others who are fighting the illness.

Larry announced he was stepping down from the anchor desk earlier this year after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease - which has affected his voice.

"Only one person out of 50,000 gets ALS. One out of 50,000 and I'm the one," Larry explained.

He's been making these last few months count- contributing to studies aimed at helping future patients-and raising money for ALS research.

"It shuts down your body. There's no known cause. There's no known cure," explained Kara Strang, Senior Development Coordinator, ALS Association, Catfish Chapter.

Strang said it is a costly disease in more ways than one

"A lot of it is home modifications, adding a ramp, getting a wheelchair, getting wheelchair van, these are very expensive things that people just don't realize how much they cost," she said.

That's why we walk. Some of the money raised will go to research, and the rest will stay right here in North Carolina providing grants and other resources to those fighting ALS.
