Laughing gas comes to Rex delivery rooms
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is now being used in Rex Hospital delivery rooms as a way to reduce pain during labor

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Something that's been used in delivery rooms for decades made its way to Rex Hospital in Wake County - nitrous oxide.

You might know it as laughing gas, the same thing you get at the dentist's office.

But it's a little different when a woman uses it when she's having a baby.

A patient breathes in the nitrous oxide right before the contraction starts. It takes the edge off the pain and it wears off by the time the contraction is gone. Women like it because they still feel in control, connected, and focused while they're having their baby.
