RALEIGH (WTVD) -- I always know about the bad contractors because that's who viewers bring to my attention. Who I don't hear about often are the good companies.

Thursday night I had the honor of MC'ing the STAR Awards for the Remodelers Council which is part of the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County.

The Council is only open to those contractors who meet certain standards of financial responsibility, technical competence, and have a record of fair dealings with consumers.

These are the good contractors. The contractors are licensed, insured, take pride in their work, and they want to have a satisfied homeowner at the end of job.

Viewers always come to me after they have shelled out thousands of dollars and their contractor has left them with a mess. My advice is always to do your research before signing a contact or paying a dime.

There are great contractors on the Remodelers Council and they have great tips on what steps you should take before starting a project in your home. Check the organization out at http://wakeremodelers.com/homeowners
