Community steps in to help Knightdale family whose home was gutted by fire
KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Knightdale family whose home caught fire Thursday is getting help from the community.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 1100 block of Delham Road around 3 p.m. Thursday.
Daniel Nourie was doing some spring cleaning when the house went up in flames. He and his wife, Alicia, raced to get their children outside.
"They just were screaming at the top of their lungs, 'My house is burning down,'" said Nourie.
Charred wood and melted siding now litter the yard. Family photographs, clothes, even the shoes off his children's feet are gone.
"I'm supposed to provide for them, and I don't have anything for them right now," said Nourie.
Nourie's children are preparing to return to school soon.
As word of the destruction spread, parents at East Wake Academy sprang into action organizing a fundraiser at the Flying FroYo next Saturday to help them get back on their feet. Half of the sales will go to the Nouries.
"Everybody pulls together when something goes wrong with another family at the school, and everyone just jumps in and tries to help any way that they can," said parent volunteer Jennifer Hogg.
As the Nouries sift through the tattered remains of their home, they are overwhelmed by the support.
"We try to give to people when we can and to be the people on the receiving end it's hard for us because we're not the type of people who ever want people to give to us," said Nourie.
