Methodist University student lives his dream of helping decorate White House for Christmas
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A young man with dreams of a White House Christmas made his wish come true this year.
Maurice Edwards was among roughly 90 volunteers who helped decorate the White House for the Obama family's final Christmas there.
The 20-year-old Methodist University student was a part of the Garland and Wreaths team. Every wreath in the House went through his hands.
His experience with interior design comes from decorating his own home through the years where he tries to incorporate a theme, a tradition that began at our nation's capital.
This year's Christmas theme at the White House was "gifts of reflection." Each sparkling ornament was placed around the foyer in hopes to inspire visitors to reflect on Christmas' past.
But for Edwards, looking back on Christmas is easy and the reasons he is so passionate about spreading holiday cheer.
"When I was four-years-old, I was diagnosed with Kawasaki syndrome. My heart was failing so they transferred me to UNC and helped revive me and I came back, two days before Christmas," Edwards said.
Edwards has been invited to decorate President Barack Obama's home once he leaves the Oval Office. In the meantime, Edwards said he still can't quite believe his first White House experience was real.
"I still have to pinch myself every time I went through the gate to make sure I knew we were actually decorating the White House," he said.
