JORDAN LAKE, NC (WTVD) -- Emergency workers searched Jordan Lake Thursday for a missing kayaker from Cary.

Just after 1 p.m., authorities got a call about an overturned kayak about 400 yards offshore from the Farrington Point Boat Ramp.

The boat was towed to shore, but there was no sign of the man seen earlier in it: 69-year-old Tommie Columbus Justice Jr.

Authorities said Justice goes paddling in the area regularly. He didn't have any known medical conditions.

Crews spent about seven hours searching for Justice Thursday before suspending the search for the night. They'll be back at it early Friday morning.

Officials said because they don't know exactly where Justice went missing, they have a huge search area to cover.

"It's very difficult. Even with sonar units [which are] our most reliable source at this time. It's just a large area to cover. And it's back and forth. There's a lot of debris on the bottom of the lake and it's just hard to see," said North Chatham Fire Chief John Strowd.
