NC-42 shut down in Clayton due to major gas leak
Due to the size of the leak, the gas was visible from the air, and from the ground.

CLAYTON (WTVD) -- Highway 42 was shut down between Glen Laurel and Castleberry Road in Clayton for most of Monday until Tuesday morning due to a major gas leak.

Images from Chopper11 HD showed gas spewing from an 8-inch underground line that was hit by crews digging in the area around noon. The gas line is owned by Piedmont Natural Gas.

Due to the size of the leak, the gas was visible from the air, and from the ground.

There were no evacuations due to the incident.

During the road closure, officials set up detours in the area. The town said in a statement that residents who lived in Fox Ridge or Woodbury were able to return to their homes. Deputies at the road block were assisting people through.

NC-42 later reopened around 2 a.m.
