Whiteville man charged in death of his children's mother

CHADBOURN, N.C. -- Authorities say a Whiteville man has been charged in the death of his children's mother after a fight at her home.

Local media outlets reported that 42-year-old Wendell Hardie was arrested after Saturday's shooting. Hardie is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Kena McMillian.

Columbus County Coroner Lynwood Cartrette says McMillian was shot in her home with a shotgun during a fight with Hardie. Cartrette says at least two of their children were in the home when the shooting occurred.

Cartrette says McMillian died at a hospital in Whiteville. The children were not hurt.

Hardie is being held without bail. It isn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
