During an iTeam investigation into how the state is tracking sex offenders, ABC11 learned when officials discover a registered offender is getting too close to children.

Probation officer David Reid says the first thing he does when he gets to work every morning is check his email for alerts sent out via the ankle monitors worn by sex offenders.

Many sex offenders have to wear ankle monitors that are equipped with GPS technology so they can be tracked 24 hours a day.

However, a shortcoming in the monitor surveillance program was discovered, meaning convicts are still going out and committing other crimes.
