Former Duke basketball coach Bill Foster has died. He was 85.

Foster guided Duke to the NCAA title game in 1978, where the Blue Devils lost to Kentucky, 94-88.

Foster, who coached at Duke from 1974-1980 was named national coach of the year in 1978, when he led a talented team anchored by three-time first-team All-ACC center Mike Gminski.

Foster's success at Duke restored the program to national prominence, setting the stage for the abundant success of Blue Devils' next coach, Mike Krzyzewski.
