As the winter storm moves northeast and brings central North Carolina a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain today, here are some tips on staying safe on the roads.

First off, if you don't have to go out, stay home.

Any exposed surfaces such as roads, bridges, overpasses, trees, utility lines, and hand rails will be ice-covered.

If you do have to go out, make sure you give yourself plenty of travel time.

And go slow!

If you have four-wheel drive, you may be able to plow through the wintry mess, but that does not mean it is safe.

And as the precipitation falls and changes from sleet, to snow, to rain, windshields could ice over as you drive.

So just remember, stay safe out there!
