HICKORY (WTVD) -- A Lenoir-Rhyne University student was killed Friday morning in an ice-related accident in Hickory.

The crash happened on Sixth Street Drive Northwest.

Firefighters said the car slid off the road north of downtown Hickory sometime overnight.

Officials said the student, Madeline Scalf, 19, of High Point, died in the crash.

MyFox8 reported later that authorities said alcohol was a primary factor. Scalf left a party where investigators believe she had been drinking and then tried to drive, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Authorities also said she wasn't wearing a seat belt properly and speed may have been a factor. She died on impact.
