DURHAM (WTVD) -- A Durham police officer went beyond the call of duty Monday night when he gave an 80-year-old woman a space heater when he learned she had no heat.
Police say Officer Andrew Wilkinson was dispatched to her home and asked to provide her with some resources for assistance. When he got there, he discovered she was using her oven to try to heat her house.
The house was still cold and he was concerned about a fire risk, so he went to a nearby store and bought an electric heater, police say.
Officer Wilkinson was commended for going above and beyond "...to keep her safe and warm in the middle of a freezing rain storm."
