Hoke County woman charged with attempted murder, felony child abuse

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Hoke County woman has been charged with felony child abuse and attempted murder after a child was found unresponsive at her house in Jan. 2014.

Hoke County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Belton's Loop in Raeford on Jan. 23, 2014 around 4 a.m. When EMS arrived, they found an unresponsive child, who was then take to the local hospital because of "trauma to his body."

Deputies said the child is currently blind and partially paralyzed as a result of the abuse.

Based on the evidence, detectives charged Wanda Faye Govan with attempted first-degree murder and felony child abuse. Govan was arrested in High Point on Feb. 28.

Govan claimed to be the victim's godmother, but deputies said she is a family acquaintance. The child was reportedly staying at her home after some family issues, authorities said.

Deputies said the child's mother was in Guilford County at the time and thought Govan's was an appropriate place for her child.

Govan is being held under a $500,000 secured bond. The victim is now in the custody of the state.
