Man Tasered after Johnston County chase dies days later
KENLY, NC (WTVD) -- A man Tasered by a law enforcement officer after a high-speed chase in Johnston County last week has died.
The chase started Thursday afternoon on Hwy 301 in Kenly and continued into the Princeton area of Johnston County, Kenly police said. The driver lost control of his pickup and came to rest on the side of the road at Hwy 70 and Bizzell Grove Church Road.
At that time, police said 37-year-old Alex Thompson of Princeton exited his truck and an officer deployed his Taser.
Thompson suffered some kind of medical emergency and was taken to WakeMed.
Thompson's sister, Stephanie, told ABC11 Tuesday she blames police for killing her brother.
"Nobody need to have somebody go from being their best friend to their guardian angel," said Stephanie Thompson. "There is no way Alex was the aggressor in that situation. There was no way he was armed. He didn't carry any type of weapon."
The family said Thompson died Sunday at WakeMed Hospital. He had been on life-support since Thursday.
"I'm just hurt. I'm not mad as I just don't understand why he had to die because he didn't have to," said Stephanie Thompson.
Thompson's family isn't sure when they're going to get his body back and lay him to rest.
The N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
"We wait for a medical autopsy, then we bury him next to my dad and then we try and pick up the pieces somehow. I don't know we're going to do that," said Stephanie Thompson.
He leaves behind a fiance and three children.
