CHARLOTTE -- Detectives are searching for a white van after the driver hit a 6-year-old child and kept driving Sunday afternoon in east Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Police and medics were called to the accident in the 1300 block of Eastway Drive around 12:30 p.m.

Investigators said the boy and his family were trying to cross the street when the 6-year-old was hit by a work van with a ladder rack on top and possibly a South Carolina license plate.

Witnesses said the van stopped and the driver got out, but then he got back in and drove off.

According to officers, the driver was described as a Hispanic male in his mid-30's with curly black hair wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans.

The boy was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center but was pronounced dead at 1:02 p.m.
