FAIRFIELD, N.C. -- Authorities say that drugs are suspected after 10 inmates at Hyde Correctional Institution got sick and required hospitalization.

State Department of Public Safety Spokesman Keith Acree tells The Daily Reflector of Greenville that five inmates were taken to the hospital on Wednesday and another five on Friday.

Acree says the symptoms were consistent with substance abuse or a drug overdose.

Officials believe the drug was K2, also known as Spice, which some people call synthetic marijuana. It can have stronger effects on the brain than marijuana.

Hyde Correctional Institution in Hyde County is a men's medium and minimum security prison that has space for almost 750 inmates.
