FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A Fayetteville couple was charged Friday with felony child abuse of a 2-year-old girl, with one of the accused charged with the 1998 death and sexual assault of another child almost the exact same age as this victim.

Jimmy Tyron Baldwin, 48, was with the victim on June 11 before returning her to her biological mother, authorities said. The victim's mother took the child to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center because she was "not acting right," police said.

The victim was life-flighted to UNC Hospitals with life-threatening injuries caused by non-accidental trauma, investigators said. The child has since been released from the hospital, though her condition and injuries were not disclosed.

Jimmy Baldwin was charged in 2002 with the death and sexual assault of an 18-month-old child that occurred in 1998. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was released from prison in 2008. Detectives did not say what his relationship is with this victim.

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department's Youth Services Unit have charged Chaka Demarra Baldwin, 25, and Jimmy Baldwin with felonious child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

Chaka Baldwin was processed and released from the Cumberland County Detention Center after posting a $10,000 bond. Jimmy Baldwin is still in custody of CCJ under a $250,000 bond.

If anyone has information concerning this incident, they are asked to contact Detective A. Comer with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
