WILMINGTON (WTVD) -- Authorities in Wilmington are searching for an inmate who escaped from New Hanover Correctional Center Wednesday morning.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said Stephen Singleton was discovered missing after a 5 a.m. headcount.

Officials said they believed Singleton scaled a fence to leave the prison.

The 34-year-old, who is from the Wilmington area, was serving sentences for habitual misdemeanor assault and larceny. He was slated to be released in January 2018.

Authorities are asking anyone who has seen Singleton or has information about his whereabouts, to call local law enforcement or New Hanover Correctional Center at (910) 251-2666.
