Fayetteville police arrest man accused of intentionally running over pedestrian
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVD) -- The man accused of intentionally running over a pedestrian now faces additional charges for an unrelated crime, Fayetteville Police said late Thursday afternoon.
Earlier Thursday, police said 39-year-old Stoney Gene Riley was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
He also faces charges of misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor conspiracy, and felony attempting to obtain property by false pretenses.
Charges have also been brought against Riley's passenger at the time, Denine Marie Goodwin, 46, of Pinehurst. She is not in custody.
She is charged with misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor conspiracy, and felony attempting to obtain property by false pretenses.
These latest charges stem from an incident at the Target store at 2056 Skibo Road, in Fayetteville, that took place on July 31.
Goodwin is the owner of the vehicle that struck and killed the pedestrian, 31-year-old Justin Thomas Atkins.
It happened around 11:30 Monday morning in the 5200 block of Patton Street in the Bonnie Doone neighborhood.
Investigators said the victim was walking along the street when a car pulled up next to him and asked him if he had any drugs for sale.
The victim said he didn't and walked away. That's when the driver of the car hit him with the vehicle and fled the scene.
The victim was able to get himself to a nearby home and a resident called 911. He later died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
On Wednesday, police identified the victim as Atkins.
Also Wednesday, detectives identified a Honda Pilot that was seen leaving the area of Patton Street just moments after the pedestrian was struck.
