SPRING LAKE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Troy McDuffie, the Chief of Police for the Spring Lake Police Department, announced Monday he will be retiring effective December 1, 2016. He's served the last 7 years as chief, taking over in December 2009.

He said he felt it was "time to close the door on my 30 year law enforcement career" and that it's time for the next generation to lead.

McDuffie took over the same year the police department was stripped of its arrest powers and two officers were arrested for corruption.

In his retirement announcement, he said he is proud of his achievements, including restoring full powers to the police department and renewing the community's trust, confidence, and support.

He also thanked Sheriff Earl Butler and his staff as well as surrounding Cumberland County agencies who helped during their rebuilding process.

McDuffie praised the town and the police department and said he was humbled by their support.
