Raleigh Rescue Mission hosts backpack giveaway
Raleigh Rescue Mission's Backpack Giveaway is August 20

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Hundreds of donated backpacks and school supplies will be handed out on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Raleigh Rescue Mission Backpack Giveaway and Sales Event.

The giveaway takes place at the Mission Store and Donation Center at 4700 Capital Blvd.

"We had set a lofty goal of 500 backpacks, and we have easily exceeded that goal. And supplies keep coming in, so we're so excited," said Lauri Para, Public Relations Representative for the Mission.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m.

"It's a first-come first serve, so, we're asking parents to bring children - as many as want to get a backpack per child until supplies are gone," Para explained.

Backpacks have been stuffed with items for K-5 and 6-12 graders in Wake County based on the county lists with the most standard items. All backpacks and supplies are new and were donated by individuals and corporations.

In addition to the giveaway, there will also be a $5 bag sale to fill with children's clothing and shoes and a BOGO sale inside the store all day. In addition, expect hourly gift card raffles and Muddy the Mudcat will make a visit from 12 p.m.-1 p.m.

Donations of backpacks, school supplies, and funds are always accepted. You can text RRMB2S TO 41444 to donate as well.
