FUQUAY-VARINA, NC (WTVD) -- A motorcyclist was killed east of Fuquay-Varina Thursday night in a chain reaction crash on NC Hwy 42 at Johnny Baker Road.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. when authorities say a 16-year-old driver said she was looking down to adjust her air conditioning, and slammed into the back of two cars that were stopped.

The crash set off a chain reaction, pushing one of the cars into oncoming lanes. The motorcyclist was unable to stop in time and was killed.

He was later identified as 27-year-old Michael Thatcher of Fuquay-Varina.

Another person was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh with serious injuries and an additional two went to WakeMed in Garner.

The teen is charged in connection with the accident. Authorities are withholding her name because of her age.
