Woman killed in Roxboro fire trying to save dog

ROXBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- A woman was killed in a fire early Monday morning in Roxboro after she went back into the house to try to save her dog, according to fire officials.



It happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of Gentry Dunkley Road.



The Roxboro Fire Department said it started in a bedroom at one end of the house. The people inside woke up after alarms went off.



Everyone was able to get out, but one woman went back in for her dog. Crews found her dead in her bedroom, only feet from the pet.



Her name has not been released.



The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The SBI has been called in per standard protocol when there is a fatality.
