'To Kill a Mockingbird,' 'Huck Finn' temporarily suspended in Va. schools

A Virginia student's parent filed a formal complaint with the Accomack County Public School system for the use of racial slurs in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," First Coast News reports.

A racial slur appears 219 times in Mark Twain's novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and 48 times in Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Per the Accomack County Public Schools policy manual, the use of both novels has been temporarily suspended.

A section of the policy explains that a complaint can be filed and a committee will review the reading material. Per the policy, the material will be temporarily suspended pending the committee's determination.
