BURLINGTON, NC (WTVD) -- A Burlington girl is in need of a life-saving transplant, and volunteers are stepping up to help her raise the money for her surgery.

Jahzara Thompson was born in 2005 and has been battling Sickle Cell Disease her entire life. The doctors at Duke University Medical Center have recommended a life-saving stem cell transplant.

The cost of a transplant often exceeds $500,000, according to the Children's Organ Transplant Association.

An estimated $40,000 is being raised by Burlington volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities that will help with transplant-related expenses. Individuals and groups interested in more information can contact Community Coordinator Shamekia Warren at (336) 512-3164 or snwebb30@gmail.com.

Donations can also be mailed to the Children's Organ Transplant Association, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana, 47403. Checks or money orders should be made payable to COTA, with "In Honor of Jahzara T." written on the memo line of the check.

Secure credit card donations are also accepted online at www.COTAforJahzaraT.com.

COTA says 100 percent of all funds raised are used for transplant-related expenses.
