RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A north Raleigh child was rushed to the hospital after Raleigh Police say he shot himself in the face Friday evening.

It happened at the Falls Creek townhomes in the 5200 block of Evergreen Forest Way.

The area is north of I-540 and east of U.S. 1.

The child was rushed to WakeMed. Officials said the bullet hit him in the chin and he was conscious when he left in the ambulance. The child was transferred to Duke Hospital on Friday night.

Police arrested 34-year-old Jamick Dakota Corely in connection with the shooting. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with an altered or obliterated serial number, failure to store a firearm safely to protect a minor, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Corely was taken to Wake County Detention Center. It is not yet clear what Corely's relationship was with the injured child.

Residents tell ABC11 they didn't hear the shots fired, but saw the chaos after. Folks rushed out of their homes as sirens blared in the ordinarily quiet neighborhood.

Eyewitness Danny Royale saw EMS frantically placing the toddler in an ambulance.

"We wanted to see which apartment they were going to, so in like 30 seconds they ran back with the child, put in the ambulance and took off. The child only wearing pampers," said Royale.

ABC11 was there as officers retrieved the weapon. Officers were also seen interviewing people in the back of police cruisers.

Residents say the people who live in the house where the shooting happened moved in a couple months ago.
