FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Heavy smoke and flames engulfed a historic Fayetteville home Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the corner of Orange and Chance Streets around 12:15 p.m.

The home, which once belonged to early 1900s Fayetteville educator Edward Evans, has been abandoned for many years, according to law enforcement officials.

Firefighters pried boards off the windows in the home, and ensured no one was inside.

Fire officials said three people were seen running from the home after the fire began. They are believed to be homeless.

No cause for the fire has been determined.
