Lawyer: Prosecutor says man jailed for 36 years is innocent

The lawyer for a man who has been in prison for 36 years after being convicted of two murder charges says a prosecutor agrees his client is innocent.

Attorney Chris Mumma told The Fayetteville Observer that Bladen County District Attorney Jon David agreed in recent court action that 70-year-old Joseph Sledge didn't kill a mother and her daughter in Bladen County in 1976.

David told the newspaper he can't confirm his comments because he is not allowed to talk about the case before it is finished.

The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission is considering Sledge's case and determined three judges should hear it.

Mumma says fingerprints at the scene of the killing don't match Sledge and DNA found on the victim is not Sledge's DNA.
