KITTY HAWK, NC (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation and officials with the Town of Kitty Hawk are evaluating the damage after a May Day storm ripped up about 100 yards of NC Hwy 12.

Pictures from Sam Walker with The Outer Banks Voice show how the road was undermined and collapsed in large chunks onto the beach below.

Walker says the storm washed away a large section of sand dunes before taking out the road.

A much longer stretch of dune line and N.C. 12 in the same area was washed out by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
